The Welty House

Because of its strategic position, the Welty House is known for its use by Confederate sharpshooters during the Battle of Gettysburg to target Union soldiers across the farmlands to the east. According to US Ghost Adventures, it was in this vast field that the house of Jennie Wade, the only civilian casualty of the battle, stood. It is believed by many that the bullet that killed Jennie came from the gun of one of the snipers hiding in the Welty House. In addition to the human carnage, the house was left scarred by bullet holes and cannon fire, some of which are still visible in the brick today.

Because of the tragic and gruesome events that occured at the Welty House and on the property surrounding it, visitors claim to hear phantom gunshots, see apparitions of soldiers in full uniform, feel cold spots, and have eerie sensations while there.

In addition to the spirits of both Union and Confederate soldiers, the Welty House is said to be home to the ghost of Charlie Toot, a former owner of what is now the Brickhouse Inn. His spirit is often seen and heard giving orders or moving furniture. Also, the spirits of two of the infant children of Solomon and Jane Welty who died before the Civil War are believed to haunt the home.

Paranormal enthusiasts believe the house may harbor "residual hauntings," where intense emotions and traumatic events imprint energy onto the environment, causing ghostly reenactments of past events. Given the Welty House’s connection to sharpshooter activity and the devastation it endured during the battle, it is thought that these residual hauntings might explain some of the strange occurrences.

Steeped in rich history with modern day comforts, today the Welty House (along with the Victorian House) stands as the Brickhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast and is great place to stay when you're visiting one of the most haunted cities in the United States, that is....if you're brave enough.
