About This Tour

The Salem Night Tour says its guides are unscripted and focused on getting the history right. It says the tour centers on Bridget Bishop’s homestead, the iron gates of Salem’s oldest cemetery, and the site where Giles Corey was pressed to death. The listing adds the original witch gaol, the 1830 murder at the Gardner-Pingree House and a Hocus Pocus filming location. It blends ghost reports with history, for visitors who want both on one walk.

Places This Tour Covers

House

Gardner-Pingree House

In April 1830, an intruder came in through a back window in the night and murdered Captain Joseph White in his bed here, the Salem Gazette reported. Local lore says his footsteps are still heard and a child in white looks out of a downstairs window.

Restaurant

Turner’s Seafood at Lyceum Hall

An 1867 history puts Bridget Bishop's orchard on the ground under Lyceum Hall. Turner's Seafood, the restaurant there now, says the ghost of Bishop, the first person hanged in the 1692 witch trials, still haunts and oversees the building.

Other

Old Town Hall

Salem's oldest surviving town building went up in 1816 and 1817 where merchant Elias Derby's mansion stood, and legend has it Derby's ghost haunts it, still unhappy that his house was torn down.

Other

Salem Witch Jail

A plaque on Federal Street marks where Salem's 1692 jail held people accused of witchcraft. The Salem Night Ghost Tour says one of them, four-year-old Dorothy Good, still searches the ground for her mother.

Cemetery

Old Burying Point (Charter Street Cemetery)

Salem's oldest burying ground, laid out in 1637, holds witch-trial judge John Hathorne, and the woman in white said to walk among its stones is Mary Corey, first wife of Giles Corey, as the Boston Globe told it in 2018.
