About This Tour

The listing describes a tour led by local historians, teachers and artists, with most of the time given to the causes of the 1692 witch hysteria, Salem’s rise as a seaport and 300 years of architecture. The supernatural content is lighter, with tales such as the Lady in Blue on the Essex Street pedestrian mall. Stops at the Witch House, Ropes Mansion and Charter Street Cemetery are outside only. The listing says it is dog friendly and handicap accessible. It suits visitors who want one general Salem tour that includes some ghost stories.

Places

Places This Tour Covers

House

Ropes Mansion

The Ropes Mansion's front played a part in Disney's Hocus Pocus in 1993, and Salem Ghosts tells of Abigail Ropes, who died after an accident by the fireplace and is said to linger in its rooms.

Other

Old Town Hall

Salem's oldest surviving town building went up in 1816 and 1817 where Elias Derby's mansion stood, and Salem Ghosts says Derby's ghost haunts it, still unhappy that his house was torn down.

Cemetery

Old Burying Point (Charter Street Cemetery)

Salem's oldest burying ground, laid out in 1637, holds witch-trial judge John Hathorne, and the woman in white said to walk among its stones is Mary Corey, first wife of Giles Corey, as the Boston Globe told it in 2018.

House

The Witch House

Often called the only building still standing with direct ties to the 1692 witch trials, Judge Jonathan Corwin's house is the one you can still walk into.
